How did I get hooked on Zelda? Well, let's start at Christmas of 1998. I remember the day that my brothers and I opened up three different packages. One was the N64 (I opened that one!). My older brother opened up a Rumble Pak/Memory Card, and my little brother opened..."The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time". In my mind, I thought, "Ohhhh no! ANOTHER Zelda game!" What?? Why would I think that? Let's go back a LITTLE more.
You see, for a while, my brothers went to the video store and rented the same game OVER AND OVER. That game was the infamous "A Link to the Past". After a while (and spending over $100 on rentals), my dad finally went and bought the game. To tell you the truth, this game scared me to death. Although I LOVED to watch my brothers play, when I played, I was so scared of the guards that I would throw the controller back to my brother and give up. Heck, I would SCREAM! Also, I happened to be a big MARIO fan, at which I was EXTREMELY good at my favorite game, Mario 3.
Well, I got a BIIIIG surprise. At first, I hated the game (AGAIN) because of the Deku Babas in the Deku Tree. But after BOTH of my brothers got ahead of me, I thought, "THAT'S IT! I'M GONNA BEAT THEM!" After beating the first dungeon, I caught up to my little brother (who was only in the second place by then), and soon surpassed him. I then began to love the game to death. Unfortunately, by the time I was done with the first dungeon, my older brother, being a big Zelda fan himself and liked to get things over with, was already in the FOURTH dungeon.
I never DID beat the game before my brother, although I was only a temple behind him. I like to take my time with stuff, and after beating Ocarina of Time, I wanted more. So, the next Christmas, I got [enter trumpets] a Game Boy Color and "Link's Awakening"! I fell in love with this game, and beat it with almost no guide. You can probably imagine my excitement when I heard that Majora's Mask (called "Gaiden" back then) was coming out in the U.S.!
Well, now I've started a game on "A Link to the Past", hungering for more Zelda. But that's my Zelda "love story". I can't wait to get the Triforce series for Game Boy!
